This study examined whether proactive coping moderated the relationship between stress and anxiety. To this end, 231 college students were asked to complete Perceived Stress Scale(PSS), Proactive Coping Inventory(PCI), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI), and the results of the study were follows: First, stress had a positive effect on anxiety, and proactive coping had a negative effect on anxiety. These results could serve as an empirical basis for expanding the discussion of the relationship between coping process and anxiety among Koreans into the realm of proactive coping. Second, the moderating effect of proactive coping on the relationship between stress and anxiety was significant. Specifically, the higher the stress, the greater the increase in anxiety in the low-proactive coping group than the high-proactive coping group. Finding of the study suggest that promoting proactive coping may be beneficial in alleviating anxiety symptoms, and based on this, the effect of intervention that can enhance the level of proactive coping to reduce anxiety was discussed.
